A Safer Place to LiveMany residents no longer feel safe on our streets. Ward Five was once a quiet, peaceful haven in a fast and dangerous world. I will increase the pressure on the police to take your concerns seriously. More police patrols will lower the number of speeding cars, lower the number of break-ins and vandalism, and make Ward Five a more comfortable place to live. But safety is more than simply more police presence. Safety is the responsibility of all of us, and it starts with our youth. I'm deeply involved with the Markham Optimist Club, and the other Optimist Clubs in York Region, who are supporting the York Region Safety Village, a program to teach safety to all school children, as well as to adults. I will encourage the formation of Neighborhood Watch and Block Parent Programs in all areas of Ward Five, and will be instituting Community Advisory Committees to work with York Region Police. The work I did as the Chair of the Community Advisory Committee of the Salvation Army's Archibald Centre, has given me a unique insight into our community safety and has helped me establish a good rapport with York Regional Police. Through regular, constructive communication, we can put in place what is necessary to bring back the feeling of security in our community.
