The Next Step in Carpooling

The East end of Markham could be the first in Ontario to benefit from the next stage of Carpooling.

The solution to our traffic gridlock is more than one solution.  It involves Transit, Rail, Wider and better engineered roadways, as well as a change in the patterns of car use, by Travel Demand systems, Flexible work space, New Urbanist Communities were people don't need to leave the community to work, and getting rid of the car with only one occupant.

I had the opportunity of a meting with Mr. Paul Minette, Director of Trip Convergence Ltd, Lorenzo Mele of the Town of Markham, as well as others, to review and work toward a plan that the Provincial Government has endorsed as a pilot.  Markham is well suited and I will be working hard to make sure that we are part of the study.

Mr. Minette demonstrated a system called The Hover System, which is a method of reducing congestion and reducing the amount of time and resources people spend sitting in traffic.

The Hover System resolves the problems associated with Carpooling such as:

• The difficulty of finding people to carpool with and making arrangements,
• The inflexibility of the arrangements once they are made, and
• The challenge of keeping it fair for all concerned.

I will have more on this initiative very shortly.
