Description Level of Service
Night Service- Road Classifications |
Arterial roads carry large volumes of traffic, include transit and emergency routes for ambulance, fire, police, etc.
Salted and/or plowed to achieve a ‘bare surface’ condition, 24 hrs/day, 7 days/week throughout the winter season.
Primary roads distribute traffic to both Town and Regional arterial roads. They provide access to schools, churches, community centres and industrial/commercial areas.
Salted and/or plowed to achieve a ‘bare surface’ condition between the hrs of 7am and 6pm, 7 days/week throughout the winter season.
Secondary roads distribute traffic onto to primary roads. They include roads with extreme hills, curves and access points.
Sanded or plowed as required to achieve centre bare conditions between 7am and 6pm, 7 days/week throughout the winter season.
Local roads generally carry very low volumes of traffic and are not intended to carry through traffic; and Lanes provide access to garages and parking spaces at the rear of homes and business
Local roads and lanes are acceptable in a snow packed condition. Plowing will be carried out only when snow accumulations reach or exceed 7.5cm. If the snowfall is continuing, plowing will commence once snowfall ceases or accumulations exceed 12cm. Normal plowing operations will take approximately 16 hours. Snow plowing will be continuous until completed. Cul-de-sacs are plowed to ensure access by residents, service and emergency vehicles. A follow-up cleaning using front-end loaders clears outside boundaries of the cul-de-sac, piling snow toward the centre of the circle. This snow remains in the centre until it exceeds the storage capacity of the cul-de-sac.
Sidewalks |
All sidewalks are plowed within 24hrs of the end of a snowfall when accumulations reach 5cm or more. Priority service is provided according to the road classification. Special attention is given to sidewalks near schools and bus stops. Plowing and sanding takes approximately 14hrs to complete.
Municipal Parking Lots
Appropriate material will be applied to designated areas, in conjunction with environmental conditions (i.e. salt, sand or de-icing material) Plowing will commence when there is a minimum of at 5cm of snow cover

Transit Winter Operations Update
The Bus Shelters are maintained by the Region of York for the Transit Authority.
I kept the Transit Operations up to date each winter, but they no longer are issuing me updates of their work after December 17, 2008..
If I can get new information for next winter, I'll be posting it for you
John
I have received clarification of the Town's By-Laws with regards to interference with snow removal from our Manager of By-law Enforcement and Licensing.
Town by-laws prohibit the parking of vehicles that interferes with snow removal operations. During snow removal operations, snow plough operators and their supervisors are in contact with Parking Control Staff and Parking Staff attend to locations in response to calls from Operations Staff. In addition, Parking Staff issue tickets and warnings through their regular patrols and from citizen complaints.
You can report an issue at any time by calling 905.477.7000 and going to the Parking Control area.
For your information, Parking Staff issued 14 tow warnings, towed one vehicle and issued 34 tickets for “Interfere with Snow Removal” during the December 16 - 18, 2007 snow storm.
Severe Thunderstorm
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is issued when conditions are likely for the development of thunderstorms, some of which may become severe thunderstorms with large hail, heavy rain, deadly lightning or damaging winds and possibly tornadoes within the areas and times specified in the watch. You should use this time to secure loose objects, shelter animals, ensure family members or co-workers are prepared to take action and listen carefully for an updated weather report. This is the time to develop a plan.
A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is issued when a severe storm has developed, producing one or more of the following conditions: flooding rain, destructive winds with gusts greater that 90 km per hour, hail of at least 10 to 20 mm in diameter or intense lightning. Severe thunderstorms may also produce tornadoes. The storm’s expected motion and developments will be given in the warning. If you are in the area specified, take shelter.
This web site provides a forum where I can bring you up to date on issues and events at the Town of Markham that affect the quality of living in our Ward.
