I am still working on these pages, so please come back often to see the updates and changes.
Promises Made - Promises Kept |
|---|---|---|
Completion of Bur Oak to Highway 7 |
| This was accomplished when John persuaded the developer to extend the road, and received permission from the Province to enter onto the Highway. This reduced the traffic bottleneck at Church Street and the 9th Line | |
Continue careful development using new urbanism |
| I chaired the Development Services Committee which eventually capped expansion into the White Belt, protected the Farmers and allowed for expansion in the designated density areas, without changing our neighbourhoods. | ||
Site and build a new fire hall in Ward 5 |
| The ground has been broken and the Cornell Fire Station will be finished by next year. It is state of the art in equipment and environmentally sound. | ||
Introduce traffic calming measures that work |
| Speed Humps only work on careful drivers. Those who use excessive speeds and don't care about our community, usually don't care about their car either. They actually speed up to go over them!. Roundabouts are more effective in reducing traffic infiltration into our neighbourhoods and they are a part of all subdivisions that I approve. | ||
Increase traffic enforcement to reduce speeding |
| I have worked closely with resident's groups and District 5 York Regional Police to have a greater police presence to curb speeders. The Highway Traffic Act is the only law that it is socially acceptable to break. Driver behavior will be changed with increased enforcement and by re-introducing "Road Watch". I was part of the group that brought The Road Watch program to Markham and I intend to make it more effective. | ||

Open a second library in Ward 5 |
| A full service library is part of the East Markham Community Centre in Cornell. It is being built as we speak and will include a medical library that is open to the public. | ||
Keep the lid on taxes |
| Zero Tax increase 2 years in a row. I sat on the Budget Sub-Committee and helped achieve this milestone without cutting services. I am confident that we will be able to keep the momentum going for next term as well. | ||
Integrate Rouge Park with our Town trail system |
| I attended every meeting of the Rouge Park Implementation Task Force and am proud of the report that was produced. It is a plan that is being followed, and has pushed the Rouge Park Alliance into action after years of dormancy. | ||
Improve the environment by creating a district energy plant |
| As a director of Markham District Energy, I am pleased to announce that the District Energy plant is being built to heat, and cool the Markham Stouffville Hospital, as well as generate some electricity. It will also supply the Community Centre and Library and Fire Station in our Ward. It is sized to be able to also look after the needs of the new development along Highway 7 | ||
