Accomplishments 2007 to 2010


I am able to get things done by working hard on numerous Town committees, which I have been honoured to either chair or a be a member of, through which I have achieved the following accomplishments.


Accomplishments in Ward 5

  • Lands acquired and construction started on the East Markham Community Centre in Cornell
  • Lands acquired and construction started on the Cornell Fire Station.
  • Construction of the expansion of the Markham Stouffville Hospital
  • Competed the Class A Environmental Assessment for the upgrade of Main Street Markham in the Original Downtown Markham. (Highway 48)
  • Board of Directors and Finance Committee of Markham District Energy. Markham District Energy is a combined hear and power facility owned by the Town of Markham.
  • Developed the Rouge Park Implementation Report, to make  certain that the people of the East End of Markham have access to the Rouge Park for recreation.
  • Second Suites strategy passed by Development Services and received by Council.
  • Development of the Cycling, Pathways and Trails Master Plan as it pertains to Ward 5.
  • Commenced construction of the Box Grove Collector Road. (Commonly called the south portion of the Don Cousens Parkway.)
  • Opened the renovated and expanded Markham Village Library branch in 2007.
  • Completed approximately 200 Acres of parkland with a total value of completed works of approximately $17 million.   Of these, approximately $7.7 million was spent on community parks and $9.3 million was spent on neighbourhood parks.  Many of these parks were in Cornell and Greensborough.
  • Undertook Markham Village Interpretive Project - Phase 1 Theme Development.

Accomplishments in Plans, Policies & Strategies affecting Ward 5

  • Chaired the Growth Strategy which approved a "Made in Markham" Growth Strategy, outlining a preferred Town Growth alternative to the year 2031
  • Approved an Integrated Leisure Master Plan which will affect the quality of life in our Town.
  • Completed the Diversity Action Plan  which will allow our communities to grow un-impeded.
  • Completed draft and launched Greenprint - Markham's Sustainability Plan.
  • Approved the first Culture Policy Plan for the Town of Markham.
  • Completed Intensification Study and District Studies for Cornell Centre, as well as other.
  • Approved the Cornell Secondary Plan update, including Cornell Centre policies for intensification.
  • Approved the Terms of Reference for Agricultural Advisory Committee
  • As Chair of the Development Services Committee, received and commented on a number of background studies that will shape our community.

    • Agricultural Assessment
    • Intensification Strategy
    • Employment Lands Strategy
    • Built Form and Height Design Guidelines.
  • Launched Markham's ten-year economic development plan - "Markham 2020, an Economic Strategy".
  • a Culture Department was created in 2009.

Accomplishments in Capital Works Project that affect Ward 5

  • Retrofitted 34 intersections with pedestrian "countdown" signals to assist pedestrians when crossing the street
  • Reconstructed and improved the Reesor Road and 19th Avenue Bridges to meet heritage guidelines.
  • Commenced construction on the Museum Collection build of 18,000 sq. ft.  The building will be complete in August and provide safe housing for Markham's heritage collections and provide new exhibition space.  the building is expected to achieve LEED Gold designation for its sustainable design and construction.
  • undertook the Markham Village Environmental Assessment Study to address enhancing the historic character of the road and streetscape.
