you are here: home > Steeles Avenue Traffic Steeles Avenue Traffic at the 9th LineThis is from an email that updates you on the status for a traffic control signal request at the intersection of Steeles Avenue East and 9th Line. Currently, the subject intersection is controlled by a side stop on 9th Line. Increasing vehicular volume is presently causing difficulty for motorists when negotiating through the intersection. A traffic control signal would alleviate this problem by allowing right-of-way for various movements at the intersection. Because the subject intersection is under Toronto’s jurisdiction, the Engineering Department requested a signal warrant analysis by the City’s Transportation Services Department. In response, Toronto’s Transportation Services Department conducted a signal warrant analysis for the subject intersection on Monday January 14, 2008 but were reluctant to provide us the results due to outstanding Region of York/Toronto issues in the area. . At our April 7 2008 meeting with Toronto they finally provided the results of this study which indicated that the intersection is not warranted for signals. It is recognized however that the study was conducted under unfavourable weather conditions and shortly following the holiday season. These types of conditions affect traffic volume levels and Toronto agreed to undertake another signal warrant analysis in mid May. Engineering staff will be reporting back with the second warrant analysis and next steps. I find these figures surprising and have suggested that we do our own study to confirm the figures just north of the intersection in the Town of Markham. I'll keep you informed of the progress. |
