Recreation Services update, Winter 2008

Please find following a snapshot of the activities and events that the Recreations Services has done during the winter of 2007 /08.

Aquatics

  • In 2007, we had 469,057 customers attend an activity at our Town Pools
  • 2008 Winter Swim lesson program registrations decreased by 18%
  • Markham Aquatics Club hosted their annual swim meet for over 460 swimmers in January
  • Swim to Survive program had 669 students participate.

Programs

  • 2008 Winter Program registrations increase by 1% serving 9170 people
  • Staff participated in the Legacy Park Association Snow festival in February
  • Staff participated in the winter festivals, the Provincial Live it Up Challenge at two Living Schools; John McCrae and Ellen Fairclough Public Schools.

Fitness

  • Fitness Memberships have increased by 19% serving a total of 3735 members.
  • 2008 Winter Group Fitness programs increased by 3% to 2477 registrations
  • In 2007 there were 198 Employee fitness memberships.
  • Youth Memberships have increased by 133% from 2005 to 2007 and are 18% of the total membership
  • Seniors Memberships have increased by 53% from 2005 to 2007 and are 11% of the total membership

Community Centres

  • The 35th edition of the Tony Roman Hockey Tournament was held with 2,000 players, 126 teams, and 229 games.
  • Rod Black hosted Coaches Night which was attended by 160 coaches and league officials from the three minor hockey associations and featured the 'real' Stanley Cup.
  • Mount Joy Arena and Indoor Soccer facility celebrated its 20th Anniversary on Sunday, January 13, 2008 with over 500 well-wishers.

Older Adults

  • The Angus Glen Seniors Badminton group hosted a tournament with a Mississauga Seniors group
  • Markham Seniors Centre hosted a Health Fair with 20 vendors and over 130 participants
  • The Thornhill Seniors Club officially opened the new games room at Thornhill Community Centre
  • Valentine Events were held.  The Thornhill Seniors Club held a luncheon attended by 130 seniors and the Milliken on the MOve Seniors held a dance for over 200 seniors
  • The Milliken on the Move Seniors group is growing rapidly with a current membership of 350.

Youth

  • The Markham Youth Task Force held an Art Expo and partnered with The Varley Gallery.  They had 9 high school and elementary schools participate.
  • The Mayor's Youth Task Force partnered with the Ontario York Region Heritage Lions Club to host Markham's first effective speaking contest.
  • The Unionville youth Council hosted a youth dance at Crosby Arena
  • The Thornhill Youth Council hosted their first teen dance last December
  • The Markham Village Youth Council has created a Friday Night Youth Club
  • The Milliken youth introduced a Bollywood dance drip-in program on Fridays at Milliken High School
  • Youth Drop-in Se rives increased in 2007 from 2006 by 16% to total 185.
