John Webster A Strong Voice for Markham Ward Five |
you are here: home > Issues > Gridlock > Regional Streetscape
Our major traffic arteries such as the 9th Line, 16th Avenue and Main Street Markham are designed and operated by the Region of York. The Town has reviewed the Regional Policy that was set in 2001 and is actively working with the Region to improve the traffic flow.
The report for the Regional Standards for the six lane roads, will recommend a preferred cross-section with convertible outside travel lanes to High Occupancy Vehicles and for bicycles. They also propose the conversion of the centre turn lane to landscaped medians were feasible. The Region will pick up the capital and operating costs for the medians and these standards are to apply the the Region's Ten Year Capital Road Program which will affect nine Regional roads in Markham.
Our Council endorsed the staff recommendations as the basis of further discussions with the Region regarding streetscape policies and authorized the staff to meet with Regional staff to review the Town comments and recommendations.
The Next Steps: The Staff will report back to Council as to the updated cost estimates, operating and maintenance costs, potential cost sharing with the Region and the impact on the Town and funding sources. The Region and Markham Staff will finalize streetscaping for projects currently underway or under design, such as 9th Line and Highway 7.
This is one part of the puzzle to get people to their destination as quickly and easily as possible.
