Much of the following information has been provided to me by the President of the Sherwood-Amberglen Ratepayers Association, Mr. Bob Baird.
A public meeting was held in Stouffville on November 10 1998. The meeting, although inconvenient to residents of Markham, was well attended by members of the Sherwood-Amberglen Ratepayers Association, as well as other residents.
There was great concern about the large increase in traffic volume that would roar past the front and back yards of the homeowners, with all the other concomitant noise and other pollution that will follow.
A task force was set up, co-chaired by Regional Councillor Gord Landon and a report issued in June 2000.
It was agreed and understood, that there needed to be arterial infrastructure to accommodate the traffic, but, since 9th line runs through residential areas, the decision was made to delay the 9th Line improvements until the other routes were built. Specifically mentioned was the Markham By-Pass, now called the Don Cousens Parkway, and implied were the internal roads of the new areas.
One of the critical recommendations was that the intersection of 9th Line and the Don Cousens Parkway (Markham By-Pass) be configured to direct traffic preferentially to the by-pass, and thus avoiding a large increase in traffic through our residential areas.
This recommendation was not followed and we ended up with a standard Regional Road intersection. While this was unfortunate, we could live with it because 9th Line was still 2 lanes wide, north of Major MacKenzie. Therefore, most of the traffic on the 9th Line would still be from the build up of homes in the Markham area.
